Understanding Kilometres per litre (Kmpl) and Miles per gallon (MPG)
Kilometres per litre is a fuel consumption parameter used in many European, Asian and Latin American countries. This metric system is also used to measure a vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Kilometres per litre is abbreviated to Kmpl. Kmpl represents the number of kilometres a driver can drive his or her car in just one litre. If the kmpl is higher, the car will be more fuel-efficient.
MPG is the abbreviation of Miles per gallon. This unit of fuel consumption is used in the United States and the United Kingdom. In the US context, the US gallon is used while the Imperial gallon is used in the United Kingdom. A vehicle with 20 MPG means the car travels 20 miles for each gallon. This unit also represents a car’s mileage. If you want to calculate mileage for a car, you can easily plan a trip with minimal expenses.
How to convert MPG to Kmpl and vice versa using formula
- Step 1: Before calculating MPG to Kilometres per litre, you must remember some important conversion factors.
- 1 mile = 1.60934 kilometres
- 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 litres
- 1 US gallon = 3.78541 litres
- Step 2: the conversion formula is mentioned below:
- Km/litre = MPG (UK) * 1.60934 / 4.54609
- Again, to convert US MPG to kmpl, Kmpl = MPG (US) * 1.60934 / 3.78541
Let us take an example of UK mpg to kmpl conversion.
Assume, your car’s fuel efficiency = 40 mpg
Now, put the mpg value in the conversion formula.
Kmpl = 40 * 1.60934 / 4.54609 = 14.16
By multiplying the mpg with the miles to km conversion factor (1.60934), we get 40 * 1.60934 = 64.37
Now, by dividing the result by 4.54609, we get the desired result which is 14.16
If you consider US mpg, the value of kmpl will be 17

Relationship between MPG and kmpl
The relationship between MPG and kmpl has been shown through graphical representation. In Graph 1, every point on the X-axis and Y-axis shows MPG (UK) and kmpl respectively. The graph shows an upward slope, indicating the direct proportion between the two metric systems.
In Graph 2, I have drawn the x-axis and y-axis as MPG (US) and kmpl respectively. Like Graph 1, we see the increase in mpg value is directly proportional to the increase in kmpl value.
Advantages of using Kmpl over MPG
- The Kmpl unit is easy to understand. As the gallon-to-litre conversion factor is difficult to remember, many people find it hard to measure fuel efficiency using MPG. So, when it comes to calculation, kmpl has an edge over MPG.
- Kmpl is an effective unit for calculating fuel consumption which further helps understand environmental impact and sustainability. It helps the drivers adopt effective driving habits to reduce carbon emissions.
- As it is easier to calculate kmpl than mpg, the drivers will understand how much fuel they need to cover a certain distance. It will help them to optimize fuel economy and cut unnecessary expenses on fuel consumption.
